Coimbra isn't overflowing with fine dining options, but the swish restaurant at the Hotel Quinta das Lágrimas is one of Portugal's foremost gourmet experiences. Chef Vítor Dias, who took over in 2015, at just 35, uses fresh, seasonal produce, with many of his fruits, vegetables and herbs grown organically in the hotel garden. The menu changes with the seasons, but typical dishes include duck with wild berries and orange gnocchi, or mixed fish in lobster sauce with samphire. Deserts include pineapple petals with pink pepper, coconut and pão-de-ló, a squeezy local sponge cake. Dias’ dishes are a visual delight, combining forms, textures and colors to make each plate a work of art. The restaurant is located in the old palace stables, its arched windows looking out on a lush, tropical garden. There's a terrific selection of wines, with a focus on the Dão and Bairrada regions just north of Coimbra.
