Solar do Bacalhau
This used to be an Italian restaurant and when it reverted to serving traditional Portuguese food, in 2014, they kept the wood-fired oven and still serve pizza. Still salt cod or bacalhau is the main attraction. This Portuguese stable is served fried with onions, peppers and tomato sauce, baked in the traditional Coimbra style with smoked ham and crumbled corn bread and a number of other ways. Perhaps the most challenging dish for outsiders is arroz de línguas de bacalhau, a creamy, risotto-like mix of rice and salted cod tongues. There's also a range of fresh fish and meat dishes with a focus on beef. Downtown Coimbra's biggest restaurant, the bustling place spreads over two floors and around a central, glass roofed atrium. The decor is a mix of modern and rustic with wooden floors, stone walls and antiques.
