The scenic 218-acre campus is covered with buildings dating from the early 1800s. The campus is filled with ancient oaks and magnolias. Note especially the historic Horseshoe, at the corner of Pendleton and Bull streets. It's worth half an hour or so to go by the McKissick Museum (tel. 803/777-7251;, located in a fine old building at the head of the Horseshoe. The museum features changing exhibitions on regional folk art, history, natural science, and fine art, and contains the university's collection of historic 20th-Century Fox Movietone newsreels.
