Getting There & Getting Around
Comayagua is just a few blocks northeast of CA 5, which runs between Tegucigalpa (1 1/2 hr. away) and San Pedro Sula (3 1/2 hr. away). El Rey Express (tel. 504/2237-8561) runs hourly buses to both San Pedro (L200) and Tegucigalpa (L50). Transportes Rivera (1a Av. SO and 2a Calle SO; tel. 504/2772-1208; L200) runs to San Pedro hourly from 5am to 4pm. To get to Lago de Yojoa, get on any San Pedro-bound bus and ask to be let off at La Guama. Buses stop and can be boarded at the Texaco gas station towards the turnoff to the highway.
Anywhere in Comayagua can be reached on foot. The town follows a standard Spanish grid, surrounding the Parque Central. Nearly all churches, museums, and restaurants can be found within a few blocks of this square.
Banco Atlántida (1a Calle NO and 2a Calle NO; Mon-Fri 8:30am-3:30pm and Sat 8:30-11:30am) will exchange traveler's checks and has an ATM. In the Parque Central, there's a small Tourist Center (tel. 504/2772-2080) with maps and brochures. To make long-distance calls, head to Hondutel (1a Av. NE and Calle 5a NO; daily 7am-noon and 12:30-9pm). Internet cafes are scattered all around the center.
Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is a huge deal in Comayagua. From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the city is flooded with tourists, pilgrims, day-trippers, and everyone else who wants to experience the most passionate religious celebration in Honduras. Processions and festivities occur every day in and around Comayagua's colonial churches and plazas. Good Friday is for many the most important day of this week; it's also when you will see alfombras, colorful sawdust carpets laid out to be trampled on during the solemn Via Crucis Procession, in which a volunteer carries a cross on his back through the streets beginning at 10:30am. If you plan on staying in the city during Semana Santa, be sure to book your hotel as much as 6 months in advance.
