Come here to pay tribute to Central New York's rich hops farming heritage -- indeed, the region was the leading producer of hops in the United States in the mid to late 1800s. But this isn't your typical American microbrewery; at Ommegang, the brewers are committed to creating authentic Belgian ales, using their own strain of yeast, high-temperature open fermentation, warm cellaring, and incorporating such spices as star anise, orange peel, and coriander. The resulting award-winning beers (now distributed nationwide) are robust, hoppy, and well worth the trip out of town. While tours are brief, they are interesting, and run by friendly staff who are passionate about their beer and the craft. Best of all, you'll get some free samples.
