This zoo has come a long way since 1859, when it opened with stuffed birds, a seal in a bathtub, and a turtle in a bucket. Today at its location in Frederiksberg, west of the center of Copenhagen, it is home to 3,300 animals and 264 species.
You get to see everything from the musk oxen and reindeer of the far north to Kenyan lions. One of the main highlights here is the Norman Foster designed elephant house, inspired by the light-filled, glass domed interior of the central court in London's British Museum. Families can also watch the feeding of the zoo's occupants, including chimps, sea lions and seals.
