A paragon of Danish design—it even operates under a warrant from the Queen herself—Illums Bolighus is a multi-level wonderland of cool stuff, from housewares to furniture to kid gear. You can find items as little and as gift-appropriate as a candlestick or a cutlery set designed for a toddler's hands to large, decorate-your-place lamps and handsome flatware sets. All of it is gorgeous to look at, and much of it is affordable, since a key part of the Danish design philosophy is to make smart things accessible to all. Illums Bolighus has been operating, in one form or another, since 1925 and is worth visiting even if you have no intention of buying anything. It's located on Strøget, the main pedestrian shopping thoroughfare, in the middle of town.
