Cork Public Museum

This simple, rather endearing civic museum is a good place to get an overview of the city’s history. Displays include a few objects from Cork’s ancient past—including an Iron Age helmet and some of the oldest tools ever discovered in Ireland—but it’s strongest when it comes to the traditional crafts made in the city during the 19th and 20th centuries, including silverware and intricate lace from the Victorian period. There are also very good collections relating to the lives of local revolutionaries, including Michael Collins. The museum is located on the west side of Cork, in the middle of Fitzgerald Park—near the Western Road, where many of the city’s B&Bs are located. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the city center.
