Planning a trip to Cortona

In historic Cortona, you’ll find a tourist office at Piazza Signorelli 9, in the courtyard beyond the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca ticket office (www.cortonaweb.net; tel. 0575/637223).
Getting There
By Train
Cortona doesn't have its own station, but two stops on the main Rome-Arezzo line serve it. The nearer one, Camucia/Cortona (tel. 0575-603-018), is just 5km (3 miles) from town, but only local trains stop here. More trains stop at Terontola (tel. 0575-67-034) station, 11km (7 miles) from town. It's about a 25-minute ride from Arezzo (26 trains daily; 3.10€), 1 hour (2 hr. on the slow line) from Florence (24 trains daily; 7.90€), and 2 to 3 hours from Rome (15 trains daily; 10.20€). To save time, you can buy tickets at Cortona's tourist office.
Buses run from the Camucia/Cortona station to Cortona, but not as frequently as you’d wish—only once an hour at some periods during the day. Tickets are sold on the bus (1.60€).
By Car
From Arezzo (24km), take the SS71 and turn off for Cortona at Il Sodo (especially for Il Falconiere hotel) or Camucia. From Florence or Rome, take the A1 to the Valdichiana exit and follow the Raccordo Perugia-A1 (direction: Perugia) until the Cortona exit. This same highway originates in Siena. When the road divides just below Cortona, turn right and park for free in the lot on your right. From there, an escalator whisks you up the worst of the hill.
By Bus
Roughly hourly LFI buses (tel. 0575-39-881; www.lfi.it) from Arezzo (50 min.) terminate in Piazzale Garibaldi, by the gate.
