Pearse Cultural Centre and Padraig Pearse Cottage
This small but engaging center is devoted to Padraig Pearse (1879–1916), one of the leaders of Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising. Dublin-based Pearse, who read the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the G.P.O. in Dublin, made Connemara his countryside home. The center uses that as a springboard from which to celebrate the region’s culture, and of course there’s plenty to say about Pearse’s all-too-short life, which ended tragically when he was executed for his part in the rebellion. After visiting the center you can walk over to his humble thatched-roof cottage and look around.
