The Sensory Gardens

On the grounds of a convent in the town of Abbeyleix, not far from the border between counties Laois and Kilkenny, these gardens were designed by people with learning difficulties. They are intended to be not only accessible but also stimulating to disabled visitors. Plants are chosen for their particularly strong effect on the senses, whether it be their vibrant colors, powerful scent, or tactile appeal. Touches like wind chimes here and there, and even an innovative “humming stone,” make this an ingenious and pleasant place to wander.
