Tullynally Castle Gardens

A turreted and towered Gothic Revival manor, this creamy white castle is dazzling. It has been the home of the Pakenham family, the earls of Longford, since 1655. Frustratingly, the building itself is only open to pre-booked groups of 20 or more. But the 12-hectare (30-acre) grounds are an attraction in themselves. Highlights include a large kitchen garden, where the grass is kept short by grazing llamas; forest trails and a riverside walk; and an idyllic path leading to a Victorian grotto. Tullynally is near Lough Derravaragh, a tranquil spot featured in the legendary Irish tale The Children of Lir. Check the website for events listings, including classical concerts—the only way you’re likely to get inside the castle without being part of a large group.
