Athlone is an unlikely location in which to find a top-notch Lebanese restaurant, but Al Mezza has fast become one of the best places to eat in the area. After seating you at one of the nicely shabby-chic tables (ours was an old sewing table), the staff helpfully takes you through the options—especially useful if you’re not familiar with Middle Eastern food. Order off the menu for healthy, delicious meat and fish dishes (try the chicken shawarma or the sea bream, simply served with cilantro and garlic), or go for the traditional mezza plate filled with tasty small servings of traditional Lebanese dishes (the hummus is a must, of course). These are designed to be shared, and entirely vegetarian options are also available. Round the meal off with some sweet baklava and ice cream. There’s a good wine list too.
