Bus Éireann (www.buseireann.ie; tel. 061/313-333) provides regular bus service from all parts of Ireland to most towns listed in this chapter, although service isn’t frequent in the most rural areas, and many of the sights located outside of towns and villages are not served by public transportation.

Although several of the major sights in this region can be reached on public transportation, you really need a car for the more remote places. Shannon Airport has offices for international car-rental chains Avis (www.avis.ie; tel. 061/715600), Budget (www.budget.ie; [tel] 061/471361), and Hertz (www.hertz.ie; tel. 061/471369). Several local firms also maintain desks at the airport; among the most reliable is Dan Dooley Rent-A-Car (www.dan-dooley.ie; tel. 061/471098).
