Foto House & Gardens
This is one of two popular attractions on Fota Island, a small island in Cork Harbour that is fully accessible by road. Built in the 1820s, Fota House is considered to be one of the finest example of a Regency mansion in Ireland. You can wander the elegant, classically-influenced interior by yourself, or take a tour (daily 11am, 12:30, 2, and 3:30pm—booking is advised). The house also maintains a working Victorian kitchen garden, which you can tour along with the house. House tours cost €8 adults, €6 seniors and students, €3 children, and €19 families; kitchen garden tours are €5 adults, €4 seniors and students, €14 families. Meanwhile the free-to-visit Fota Arboretum is a must-see for horticulturalists. Laid out at around the time the house was built, the 27-acre grounds include walled gardens, with several exotic plants that defy the odds and thrive here, thanks to the island’s unusually mild microclimate. Note: The gardens are open year-round, but the house is not.
