Cycling

Kildare’s flat-to-rolling landscape is perfect for gentle cycling. Bike rental shops are surprisingly few in County Kildare, but Cahill Cycles, Fishery Lane, Naas, Co. Kildare (www.cahill.ie; 045/881-585) comes highly recommended.

Golf

The flat plains here create excellent parkland layouts, including the Arnold Palmer–designed, par-72 Kildare Hotel & Country Club (also known as the K Club) in Straffan, Co. Kildare (www.kclub.com; 01/601-7200). The club has two courses, with greens fees ranging from €90 to €250.

Horseback Riding

While you’re in horse country, why not arrange a saddle trek in the Kildare countryside? Contact the Kill International Equestrian Centre, Kill, Co. Kildare (www.killinternational.ie; 045/877-333). Private lessons costs €50 per person, with discounts if you book as a group.

Walking

The way-marked Grand Canal Way, a long-distance walking path that cuts through part of Kildare, passes through such scenic towns as Sallins, Robertstown, and Edenderry, where you can find a room and stock up on provisions. For information go to www.irishtrails.ie/Trail/Grand-Canal-Way/18, or contact the Kildare tourist office.
