The ancestors of the great British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton built this charming country manor set amid acres of gently rolling green hills. There must be something in the water here, as current owners Carolyn and Robert have a rather adventurous past of their own, having traveled and lived in Africa for many years before settling down to run Griesmount as a B&B. Guestrooms are traditionally furnished, with famously comfortable beds—the guestbook is full of praise for the heavenly four poster—and two of the rooms have views of the River Griese. Carolyn’s delicious, hearty breakfasts are served in a room overlooking an old ruined mill. Dinners can also be arranged with notice. Griesmount has a two-night minimum stay on weekends.
