An elegant country house getaway near the famous Curragh racecourse, Martinstown dates mostly from the 1830s. Bedrooms are decorated with more than a few nods to its early Victorian origins, with heritage color schemes and antique-style furniture. Excellent four-course dinners (€50) are served around a single, long, candlelit table, which gives the appealing sense of an upper-class house party from a bygone age. Expect seasonal fare such as roast duck with spiced red cabbage, or grilled sole with lemon and caper butter. Note: Although the Curragh is just 8km (5 miles) away, a frustrating road layout means driving between the Martinstown and the racecourse, which takes up to a half-hour each way.
