Make no mistake: This is the real deal (“Helping us on the farm at feeding time is greatly appreciated,” says the website), but hosts Mark and Anne Marie go out of their way to welcome guests. The early-19th-century farmhouse has been beautifully renovated. Guest rooms are cozy and decent-sized, with plenty of natural light. Some have original fireplaces; one has exposed greystone walls and an antique-style brass bed. It’s a pastoral setting to die for—you’re right next to a river, where you can go wild-water swimming or even try your hand at fishing for trout. Home-cooked breakfasts are delicious, but you'll have to fend for yourself at dinner. (Luckily, your hosts can recommend a string of nearby places.) They’ve opened a self-contained lodge for couples, the Tree House, which sits on a rocky outcrop down by the river—what romantic bliss!—and costs €250 for 2 nights, including breakfast in the main house. The only snag in this rural idyll? Lawcus Farm doesn’t accept credit cards or checks, so make sure you’re able to pay in cash.
