The chef at this outstanding French-Irish restaurant, about a 10-minute walk from Kilkenny Castle, once ran the kitchen at Dublin’s superlative Chapter One ★★★. The sleek and atmospherically lit dining room has colorful modern art on the walls; the menu is short but subtly inventive: monkfish with coco de paimpol beans, pheasant in pastry with parsnip puree, or perhaps beef filet in a buttery bearnaise sauce with a Parmesan cheese croquette. A full vegetarian menu is always available. For dessert, try the warm caramelized pear with cinnamon ice cream. The extensive wine list is well chosen, with particularly strong French options. Locals make this their top choice for special occasions—but if the price is too high, come for the early-bird menu, very decently priced at €35 for three courses.
