There are many clean residenciales in Coyhaique that are inexpensive but pretty basic, and rooms are small and noisy; also, most have shared bathrooms and you must bring your own towel. Residencial Mónica, at Lillo 664, has a very attractive dark violet, shingled facade (tel. 67/234302) and private bathrooms, while Hostal Glady's, at Parra 65 (tel. 67/245288; patagoniagladys@hotmail.com), is both clean and friendly. Both hotels are a good notch above the rest, so book ahead. The backpacking crowd will like Spanish-owned lodge Las Salamandras (tel. 67/211865; www.salamandras.cl), in the woods across the Simpson River, a 20-minute walk from town.
