• Dolac (Zagreb): This urban market, above the main square at the foot of Old Town, is more than just a place to buy fruits and veggies. Dolac is a crossroads where people come to see and be seen; to trade gossip; and to relax with a cup of coffee. Morning is the best time to visit because that’s when the bread is freshest, the displays the prettiest, and the people the most interesting.
  • Pazar (Split): Pazar is reminiscent of a Turkish bazaar in looks, sounds, and smells. Stalls vending colorful seasonal fruits and vegetables set up each morning at sunrise, as small holders from the hills bring their own produce, including eggs and cheeses, into town. In addition, booths and tables line both sides of Hrvojeva Street outside the east wall of Diocletian’s Palace from the Riva to the Silver Gate, selling clothes, sunhats, and beach bags.
  • Placa (Rijeka): On the seafront, close to Rijeka’s port, the city market is made up of three pavilions selling meat, dairy, and fish. Out front, open-air stalls are piled high with fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, while to one side, in front of the Croatian National Theater, you’ll find a small and colorful flower market.
