Some enjoy a side trip to this nearby colonial village so much that they decide to make the town their base in the area rather than Cúcuta. Though much of Pamplona, founded in 1549, was heavily damaged in an 1875 earthquake, the many 400-year-old structures, namely churches and mansions, are in superb condition. The buildings now hold numerous museums dedicated to the religious importance of the city, which at one time held five convents.
