This tree-lined plaza in the center of the city was previously known as the Plaza Mayor de San José de Guasimal, a setting of various historical events and public performances. Today it's one of Cúcuta’s premier people-watching spots. In the center of the park is a  bronze statue of General Santander, created by the German sculptor Carl Bornr and inaugurated on August 5, 1890. Fronting the park are the Municipal building and the Cathedral of San Jose.
