Museo Casa Zavala

Cuenca’s third contemporary art space opened as the Fundación Antonio Saura in 2008, 10 years after the death of the Abstract Expressionist painter. Of all the artists inspired by Cuenca, Saura had the most personal connection. Suffering tuberculosis as a teenager, he began coming here for his health and grew fascinated by the view from his sickbed window. In a late interview he said he finally realized that without knowing it, he had been painting that view all his life. The museum, in a beautiful 18th-century mansion, contains a small collection of Saura’s work and stages regular temporary exhibitions of contemporary Spanish artists. It is now managed by the Fundación Antonio Pérez.
