Just a few hundred yards to the east of South Gate is a small local temple that remains a center of local tradition for the Bai community. During June especially, women from all the local villages make the trek here to celebrate the successful completion of rice planting. Mostly this involves cooking offerings for the temple gods and long chanting sessions. Beyond the haze of incense and camp fire smoke, this is a colorful lively scene that most tourists are completely unaware of.
