Pelican Beach Resort—South Water Caye
Operated by the folks at the Pelican Beach Resort in Dangriga, this isolated island getaway is one of the best-run little resorts on these little cayes. It’s a serene and friendly place to visit, with coral reefs swimming distance from the sandy beach (ideal for snorkeling). We especially like the individual wooden cottages here. Set on raised stilts by the water’s edge, they vary in size somewhat, but all are very cozy and charming, often painted robin’s egg blue, with similarly colorful bedding. Best is the Heron’s Hideaway which has a delightful private balcony set amid and surrounded by mangroves. Standard rooms are housed on the second floor of a converted colonial-era convent. Each comes with one double bed, two single beds, and a half-bathroom. A couple of communal showers are located on the ground level. The relatively small price difference makes it very worthwhile to book one of the cabins. Note that all of the electricity at the resort comes from solar panels, so there’s no air conditioning, and you won’t be able to operate some electronic equipment (like a blow dryer).
