They can book a hotel for you on the spot, but you'll get a better discount by shopping around and doing the negotiating yourself. A few years ago, visitors to Datong had limited choices when looking for a hotel. However, in recent years a number of comfortable and reasonably priced hotels have opened offering a variety of choices, although budget options are limited to those by the train station. Try the Feitian Binguan (tel. 0352/281-5117), where passable twins can be haggled to ¥150.
