The Tatacoa Desert is far from anywhere, though it makes a great detour if you are driving between Bogotá and San Agustín. Its best accessed through Villavieja, a 45-minute minibus ride from Neiva on the Magdalena River, the capital of the Huila department. From Villavieja, you can negotiate with taxis and moto drivers to take you out into the desert.

There is very little tourist infrastructure to speak of when visiting the Tatacoa Desert. There is one bank with an ATM, as well as a few basic hospedajes and campsites in and around Villavieja, though none are particularly recommended. You will find better options in Nieva.
