Based in Dillon or elsewhere in the valley, you can branch out to see Big Hole National Battlefield; see section 5 of this chapter for details.
The Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway is a 4-mile drive that begins on Mont. 278 west of Dillon or along Mont. 43, south of the Wise River. Only the northern 28 miles of the road are paved. Driving between the east and west Pioneer Mountain Ranges, you'll experience alpine meadows, jagged peaks, and ghost towns with numerous opportunities to camp, fish, or watch wildlife. Near Coolidge (as you drive south) you'll see the old railroad bed of the Montana Southern Railway. Built to serve the Elkhorn mine, this was the last narrow-gauge railroad built in the U.S.
