Rancho Pacifico
Rancho Pacifico can only be reached by 4x4. But the rough ride is worth it to get to this scenic perch, a hundred meters up in the mountains and few kilometers from the shore. It offers dramatic views of a vast expanse of ocean, including the famed Whale’s Tale divided sandbar. Some of those views will be from the outdoor shower or bath on the deck of your room (see below), others from a gorgeous infinity pool that bleeds into the horizon. The adults-only hotel has just 7 lovingly well-designed units, divided into villas, suites, and treehouses. Only the more modern suites have air conditioning, though with the elevation and strong breeze that’s only a problem on the hottest days. Book early, as rooms here sell out as much as a year in advance. There is a 2-night minimum stay. All-inclusive dining can be added for $65 per person, per night.
