La Roque Gageac

Literally carved into the limestone cliff behind it, this extraordinary village is a delight to stroll around, as well as being a jumping-off point for a trip on a gabare, a traditional flat-bottomed boat. Gabares Norbert (www.gabarres.com, tel. 05-53-29-40-44; 10€ adults, 8€ children under 13) offers hour-long guided tours every day from April to November. The commentary is in French, but English-language audioguides are available. Due to the town’s southern exposure, it has its own microclimate, making it possible to grow cactus and banana trees in the tropical garden (next to the church).
