If you're a car buff, you shouldn't pass up a visit to the Rolls-Royce Museum, 11A Gütle (tel. 05572/52652; www.rolls-royce_museum.at), the world's largest museum dedicated to the world's most illustrious cars. Rolls-Royce collector Frank Vonier assembled the collection, and many of the swanky cars were once owned by celebrities, including such pop icons as John Lennon or such horrors as Generalissimo Francisco Franco, the longtime Spanish dictator. Many of the vehicles were also owned by members of the British royal family, including Queen Elizabeth and the late Queen Mother. The exhibition room is a converted old spinning mill built in 1862. The vehicles are spread over three floors, where you can learn everything you need to know about the history of Rolls-Royce.

The most impressive vehicles are a seven-seater 1926 Phantom III, a continental 1933 Phantom II, and a 1936 Phantom III. Take the A14 motorway to Dornbirn, exiting at Dornbirn Süd. Drive along Lustenauerstrasse, passing the Dornbirn Hospital, and follow the signs to Gütle. By public transport, take bus no. 4 from the center of Dornbirn. Admission is 8€ ($13) for adults and 4€ ($6.40) for ages 6 to 16. It's open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm.

The most exciting excursion in the area is to Karren (976m/3202 ft.), about 2km (1 1/2 miles) from the heart of town. If you're pretty fit, you can make the climb in about 2 hours, but you can also take a cable car and get there in 5 minutes. From Karren, you can hike down to the Rappen Gorge, with the Ache River flowing through it.
