Noorder Dierenpark (Northern Zoo)
Animals from around the world roam freely at this large zoo, in habitats that have been made as natural as can be for a park in the middle of Drenthe. For instance, cliffs, pebble beaches, and realistic underwater scenery are the setting in which Humboldt penguins disport. Among the nearly 500 different species here, you'll see elephants, tigers, white rhinoceroses, giraffes, hippopotamuses, impalas, apes, baboons, kangaroos, and snakes. On the children's farm, there are a bunch of cute domesticated animals. Emmen takes its moniker of "Butterfly Town" from the magnificent tropical vlindertuin (butterfly garden).
