Planning a trip to Dresden

There’s a branch of the Dresden Tourist Information Office (tel. 0351/50-15-01; www.dresden.de) in the Hauptbahnhof (main train station), open daily 9am to 7pm. They can provide you with with all the information you need about the city, bus and walking tours, and public transportation.

Getting There

By Train -- To make Dresden work as a day trip, you’ll need to start early and take a fast Eurocity (EC) train. On an EC train, the trip time from Berlin’s hauptbahnhof to Dresden Hauptbahnhof is about 2 hours. For train information and schedules visit www.bahn.com.

Save Money with a Dresden City-Card

Admission prices to Dresden’s many museums can quickly add up. To save money, buy a Dresden City-Card (26€) at the tourist information office. This card is good for all public transportation and admission to most of the city’s museums.

By Public Transportation -- You can walk everywhere in the historic core, or use the bus and tram lines. A 24-hour pass for all forms of public transportation costs 5€. Maps and tickets are sold at machines outside the main rail station.

Bus Tours -- City tours by Stadtrundfahrt Dresden, Königstrasse 6 (tel. 0351/89-95-650; www.stadtrundfahrt.com), depart from Theaterplatz, adjacent to the Augustusbrücke (Augustus Bridge) at 30-minute intervals for circular tours of the city that incorporate all the major museums and monuments. Visitors can hop on or off the bus at any of 22 points along the way. The stops are keyed to multi-lingual descriptions in a brochure. The price is 20€ for adults, 18€ for students and seniors.
