Dubrovnik Cathedral

The town’s cathedral stands on the site of a 12th-century Romanesque cathedral, which was destroyed by the 1667 earthquake. The current structure was built in the late 17th century in the Baroque style, with an elegant cupola. The interior is quite bare, though of note is Titian’s polyptych “The Assumption of the Virgin” (1552), located above the main alter. The adjoining treasury displays an extraordinary stash of golden reliquaries (caskets used to preserve the body parts of various saints), including a gold-plated skull, arm, and leg, said to have belonged to St. Blaise, Dubrovnik’s patron saint. The skull, encased in a Byzantine crown decorated with jewels, is outstanding for its intricate craftsmanship.
