Kumrovec
Deep in the heart of rural Zagorje, 40km (25 miles) from Zagreb, Staro Selo (Old Village) is best known as the birthplace of Josip Broz Tito (1892-1980), the much-loved President of Yugoslavia, who ruled the country from the end of World War II until his death. A cluster of 25 cottages and numerous farm buildings have been restored to look just as they would have when Tito was a boy, some complete with period furnishing. On weekends, local craftsmen give displays of traditional skills like blacksmithing, carpentry, weaving, and candle-making. The house where Tito was born is easy to spot—there’s a larger-than-life bronze sculpture of the man himself, standing in the garden.
