Maritime Museum
Historically, Dubrovnik’s immense wealth was largely founded upon merchant shipping—in the 16th century, this tiny city-state had one of the largest fleets in the world. In this museum, extending over two floors, you can see an array of objects connected to Dubrovnik’s naval prowess: detailed scale models of ships, navigational instruments, ships’ equipment, maps, paintings of sea battles, and flags. You’ll find the museum in St. John’s Fortress, the fortification that once guarded the entrance to the old harbor (the city aquarium is located on the ground floor of the same building, but accessed through a separate entrance).
