Hotels in Durango
Durango has a definite lodging season. When the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs most of its trains in midsummer, expect to pay top dollar for your room, and expect higher rates during the Christmas holidays and in peak ski seasons as well. But go in the off season -- late spring and fall -- and you'll find much more reasonable rates. An easy way to book accommodations is to contact Durango Central Reservations (tel. 866/294-5187; www.durangoreservations.org). Room taxes add almost 10% to lodging bills.
Among chain and franchise motels offering moderately priced rooms are the Best Western Mountain Shadows, 3255 N. Main Ave. (tel. 800/521-5218 or 970/247-5200), charging $114 to $179 double in high season; the Comfort Inn, 2930 N. Main Ave. (tel. 800/424-6423 or 970/259-5373), with rates for two from $69 to $149 year-round; the recommended Doubletree Hotel, 501 Camino Del Rio (tel. 970/259-6580), charging $175 to $250 double (the best rooms are right above the Animas River); and Quality Inn, 455 S. Camino del Rio (tel. 800/424-6423 or 970/259-7900), with rates for two from $79 to $149. An interesting staff-free downtown lodging is Nobody's Inn, 920 Main Ave. (www.nobodysinn.com), with eclectically decorated historic rooms for $99 to $179 for two people. You reserve the room online and get a key code, and never see an employee face to face. All are in Durango, CO 81301.

Just 12 miles northeast of Durango on the bank of the Florida River, the O-Bar-O is a world away. Siesta Motel
Fronted by a vintage sign, the Siesta Motel is one of the most reliable budget lodgings in Durango. Strater Hotel
Opening in 1887, the redbrick-and-limestone Strater has long been the landmark piece of architecture in Durango. In the subsequent century and a quarter, the hotel has weathered all of the local booms and busts quite nicely, and today is the toniest place to hang your hat in town.…$$$Around Town - Hotel
The Springs Resort & Spa
This longstanding hot-springs resort got all gussied up with a Gold LEED-certified lodge that opened here in 2009.
