Strater Hotel

Opening in 1887, the redbrick-and-limestone Strater has long been the landmark piece of architecture in Durango. In the subsequent century and a quarter, the hotel has weathered all of the local booms and busts quite nicely, and today is the toniest place to hang your hat in town. Guest rooms are unique, each furnished with period antiques. Most requested is room 222, the favored accommodation for legendary Western writer, Louis L'Amour, who was inspired by the piano music and carousing at the Diamond Belle Saloon just below. The resident restaurant, the Mahogany Grille, won the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2013.
