Wilderness Trails Ranch
Operated by the Roberts family since 1970, this aptly named ranch, bounded by the Weminuche Wilderness Area 35 miles northeast of Durango, is just the place for a family getaway in the increasingly elusive Colorado where cowboys and mountain scenery abound. Most cabins have two bedrooms, one with a king or queen bed and the other with a pair of twins for the kids, and the list of activities is long and comprehensive. Horseback riding is the primary pursuit, and the wranglers here are topnotch and able to work with people of all ability levels. Guests can also go mountain biking, fishing, and hiking, or even go on a cattle drive. The food (three meals a day are provided) is varied and excellent.
