Durham Castle
Facing the Durham Cathedral from the opposite side of the "Palace Green," this was the seat of the prince bishops of Durham for more than 800 years. In 1832, it became the first building of the fledgling local college, now Durham University; it still houses University College. During university breaks, it offers unique bed-and-breakfast accommodations to the public.
