'Forage. Nourish. Share' is the tagline at Earthy. The staff are called Earthlings, the word mission is bandied about, the cheerily painted distressed furniture is made from timber dug out of skips and wind-damaged trees. For anyone who can remember '70s vegetarian chain Cranks, Edinburgh mini-chain Earthy will feel wholesomely familiar—although with a funkier designer edge. Think Ben and Jerry's does Scotland. Back in 2007, three foodie friends, Pete, Dirk and Patricia (a farmer), got together to open a market store, food hub, café, and deli in an old printworks in Southside, where you can also eat in the Back Yard among the plants. Next came a shop in Portobello followed by the third branch, a restaurant and deli in Canonside.

The café is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, all-day grazing, and takeaways. Whether you're slurping organic sweet potato soup with coconut and cardamom, munching carrot cake, or savoring a plate of seared East Lothian venison fillet with salsify, figs, buttered spinach, and a dark chocolate and chili sauce (£17), share the love and share the food.
