It all started with Bar Boda, a tiny hole-in-the-wall joint down Leith Walk. Now, at the last count, entrepreneurial Swedish couple Anna and Mike Christopherson have five Bohemian bars and eateries: Boda, Victoria, Sofi, Hemma, and Joseph Pearce. Décor is eclectic: Think retro chic with junk shop chairs and frilly lampshades. The place is fashionably cool but with a homely vibe, and regular events include knitting nights and a language café as well as cult film and music nights. There's a family friendly ethos—in the back of Joseph Pearce, with its soaring ceilings, potted plants, checked curtains, and comfy sofas, there's a stack of high chairs, toys, and games. Food-wise its up a step up from your traditional gastropub grub, with a menu that includes Swedish meatballs with a feta, mint and green bean salad, or a catfish fillet marinated in lemongrass and ginger with polenta fritters and caper salad. In August, swing by for traditional Swedish crayfish parties.
