The Contini family are Edinburgh deli royalty—and this local institution, established in 1934, is reassuringly old school. It feels like stepping back in time, with hams dangling from the high ceiling, old wooden shelves crammed with Scottish and Italian delicacies that include the family speciality, a spicy Fonteluna sausage, the recipe created in their Italian mountain village a thousand years ago. At the back of the long, narrow shop, the space opens out into a cafe where you can tuck into traditional rustic fare, made from recipes handed down over the years and washed down with a fine vintage plucked from the shelves for the shop price plus £6 corkage. There's a recommendation next to each dish in case you're daunted by the staggering array to choose from.
