Getting There & Around

Egilsstaðir is on Route 1 246km (153 miles) northeast of Höfn and 265km (165 miles) southeast of Akureyri. The distance from Egilsstaðir to Reykjavík is 653km (406 miles) by the northern route, or 696km (432 miles) by the southern route -- though with the Route 939 shortcut, the difference is negligible.

By Bus -- Bus travel between Reykjavík and Egilsstaðir requires an overnight in Akureyri or Höfn, and costs more than flying unless you have a bus passport. From June through August, Trex (tel. 587-6000; www.trex.is) runs one bus daily between Akureyri and Egilsstaðir, and Þingvallaleið (tel. 511-2600; www.bustravel.is) makes one run daily between Höfn and Egilsstaðir. From September through May, no buses connect Egilsstaðir to Akureyri or Höfn.

Austfjarðaleið (tel. 477-1713; www.austfjardaleid.is) connects Egilsstaðir to the surrounding towns of Breiðdalsvík, Stöðvarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Reyðarfjörður, Eskifjörður, and Neskaupstaður (identified as "Norðfjörður") year-round on weekdays. Ferðaþjónusta Austurlands (tel. 472-1515; www.sfk.is/gamli/ferdamal/fas.htm) connects Egilsstaðir to Seyðisfjörður in summer. Jakob Sigurðsson (tel. 472-9805 or 894-8305) takes passengers by van between Egilsstaðir and Borgarfjörður Eystri on weekdays.

By Plane -- Flights from Reykjavík are generally cheaper than bus tickets, and in good weather you get an aerial tour of Vatnajökull. Air Iceland (tel. 570-3030; www.airiceland.is) flies from Reykjavík to Egilsstaðir six times daily in each direction. Typical airfare is 10,000kr ($160/£80) one-way. Taxis are at the airport.

By Car -- Car rental agencies at the Egilsstaðir airport are National/Bílaleiga Akureyrar (tel. 461-6000; www.holdur.is), Avis (tel. 660-0623; www.avis.is), and Hertz (tel. 522-4450; www.hertz.is).

By Taxi -- The two drivers to contact are Jón Björnsson (tel. 898-2625) and Jón Eiður (tel. 892-9247).

Egilsstaðir's excellent tourist information center, Kaupvangur 10, at the campsite (tel. 471-2320; www.east.is; June 15-Sept 15 daily 8am-10pm; Jan-May 15 Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; May 15-June 15 Mon-Fri 9am-6pm; Sept 15-Dec Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat-Sun noon-4pm) serves all of east Iceland, and also offers Internet access.
