There aren't many places in the world that offer you the opportunity to take a dip in deep blue volcanic lakes. Many lakeside hotels and hostels have piers to dive off, particularly those around Lago de Coatepeque in El Salvador and Laguna de Apoyo in Nicaragua. The Pacific attracts plenty of swimmers too, but beware of strong undercurrents in some areas and remember that lifeguards are nonexistent. The beaches are, of course, the best place to top off your tan, but women should note that going topless is not an option anywhere. Several reserves and parks have excellent spring pools, and there is a bounty of waterfalls in El Salvador along the Ruta de las Flores and near Suchitoto.
