Villa Ottone
Gorgeous gardens that meet the sea, with views across the bay to Portoferraio, are the main selling point of this old-world hotel. The property's showpiece is an aristocratic 18th-century villa, directly above the beach, where the waves lull you to sleep in high-ceilinged rooms with wrought-iron four poster beds and period stuccoes and frescoes. However, only a small fraction of the hotel's rooms (the most expensive ones, naturally) are in the villa; the rest are in the '70s main building and adjacent one-story "cottage." Though not as special as the villa, these accommodations are still quite nice, many with balconies or terraces immersed in the lush gardens, and the atmosphere is more casual. Villa Ottone has its own strip of sand-and-gravel beach, a boat dock, two swimming pools, and a nicely equipped spa.
