Sabie -- The establishments reviewed here are located amid lush plantations, subtropical farms, or indigenous forest, and most feature superb views and very luxurious suites -- all of which come at a price. If you're saving up to splurge on a private game lodge, try the excellent Numbela Exclusive Riverside Accommodation (tel. 013/751-3356; www.numbela.co.za; R900-R950 double, including breakfast), with just three charming cottages on a rambling 200-acre estate with a river running through it. River Cottage is right on the river, with whitewashed walls and high thatched ceilings, and artifacts collected by the original owners from travels through Africa. Yellow Wood is slightly bigger (sleeps four) and elevated, but also has its own sandy river beach and comes with outdoor shower. Owner-host Tracey Nepten lives on the adjoining property and will ensure you find your way to the waterfalls and utilize the trails. Alternatively, the Graskop Hotel (tel. 013/767-1244; www.graskophotel.co.za; R700 double, including breakfast), a more urban option (it's in the center of Graskop town) that offers a chance to shop and interesting decor: The interiors of 22 rooms in the main block have all been designed by up-and-coming South African artists. Finally, there is the Sabie Townhouse (tel. 013/764-2292; www.sabietownhouse.co.za; R600 double B&B), walking distance from Sabie town but situated overlooking the forested Sabie Gorge, where Murray and Irene offer a very warm and personal environment.
