Not far from the Basílica is the Cueva de las Minas, a natural cave that's been used for centuries for Maya ritual ceremonies. Some claim the Black Christ actually emerged from these caves, while others say that its sculptor, Quirio Cataño, got his inspiration here. The cave is about 46m (150 ft.) deep, and you'll often see local devotees lighting candles and praying.
A small zoo here holds a modest collection of local animals. I find the enclosures and displays rather inadequate and sad, particularly those for the crocodile and ocelot. There's also a restaurant, some picnic tables, and even a basketball and volleyball court.
